At the end of July, precisely on the 26th of the month, if we move to the Neapolitan islands we find a religious festival with an almost centuries-old tradition. We are talking about the sea festival at the rocks of Sant'Anna, the most important summer festival on the island of Ischia. It is an event packed into one evening, starting at 9 p.m. at Ischia Ponte with a parade of allegorical boats and the simulated burning of the Aragonese Castle. However, it is the fireworks that take center stage, with a unique spectacle that can also be admired from the nearby islands of Procida and Ischia.

The tradition of this festival originated in 1932, since then the methods and customs have changed but the spirit linked to the origins of the festival have remained intact. The festival is characterized by the aforementioned parade of allegorical boats, or floating scenic machines inspired by themes related to the island. Artists who have frequented the island and narrated it in their works are the authors of the boat themes.

Four authors who have written about Ischia have been chosen for the 2025 edition: Vinicio Capossela, Erri De Luca, Elio Marchegiani and Andrej Longo. The builders of the four competing boats will therefore have to be inspired by them, while there will be three other boats out of the competition. We are therefore talking about a unique event of its kind, capable of offering an intense overview of the history and tradition of the island of Ischia.

We return to highlight southern gastronomy and food with a festival that has always been popular in the south and in Naples. This is the Eggplant Festival, an event that will take place in Vico Equense on August 20th and 21st, 2025. Event entirely dedicated to one of the symbolic vegetables of Mediterranean cuisine, celebrated with typical dishes, music, conviviality and the authenticity of local tradition.

Protagonist among others of the Parmigiana, one of the cult dishes of Neapolitan cuisine, the eggplant will be glorified in all its forms with food stands, tastings of local wines and lots of live music. In short, the atmosphere will be one of the most convivial possible, full of joy and Neapolitan-ness.

All this, in the wonderful scenery of Vico Equense, thus in the middle of the Sorrento Peninsula with its incredible landscapes overlooking a blue sea. Admission is free and open to all, so participating is an unmissable opportunity to experience local Neapolitan summer traditions in folklore and authenticity.

1. Naples devotion: the Piedigrotta celebration

We close with perhaps the most iconic event of the Neapolitan summer, the one that sounds a bit of a closure in anticipation of the arrival of autumn: the Piedigrotta festival. This is one of the city's oldest celebrations, certainly the most iconic summer religious event in Naples. Religious devotion, popular music and folklore come together in a unique aura that envelops the entire city.

The Piedigrotta festival is celebrated every year in September, usually in the middle two weeks for a few days; the City has not yet defined it for 2025 with respective dates. It is celebrated and joyfully dedicated to Our Lady of Piedigrotta, the patron saint of musicians to whom Naples is deeply attached. The event is itinerant and usually starts from near the Church of Santa Maria di Piedigrotta, near the Mergellina subway station.

It is followed by lavish concerts, religious parades, fascinating processions and folk dances surrounding the Chiaia neighborhood. Experiencing the Piedigrotta Festival is an incredible opportunity to dive into the city's ancient traditions. It is a different way to take advantage of the many festivals and events that Naples offers during the summer.
