Bagnoli, in the western area of Naples, today can be considered a real tourist attraction. So, here's a list of 9 interesting places to see in this suburb which belongs to the so-called Phlegrean Fields and overlooks the Gulf of Pozzuoli.

Probably its name comes from the Latin term “Balneolis”. In fact, during Roman times, in that area there were some hot springs that later bacame thermal baths and holiday destinations of rich Romans. After 1995, when several industrial facilities present in the territory were closed, a recovery policy started in the area.


1. BAGNOLI NORTH WHARF

Bagnoli North Warf is a concrete structure about 900 metres long and represents the longest seaside promenade in Europe. Built in 1962, once used for unloading of raw materials for Italsider factory, today is a pedestrian area, completely renewed, and the ideal place for a scenic walk and for jogging. The amazing view includes the Gulf of Pozzuoli, Capo Miseno, Bacoli, Monte di Procida, Procida, Ischia and Nisida (the isla - not isla of Bagnoli, connected to mainland with a bridge).

2. SEIANO CAVE

Seiano Cave is part of the Pausilypon Archaeological Site. It's a suggestive man-made tunnel, about 770 metres long, which connects Bagnoli with the Gaiola Deep Valley. The passageway, which was dug out about two thousand years ago and reinforced during the Bourbon period, reaches the archeological site that contains the ruins of the Imperial Villa, in which there are also the remains of a big theatre and of the Odeion.

3. CITTÀ DELLA SCIENZA

Città della Scienza is the main scientific-interactive of the Italian museums, a place for experimentation, learning, entertaining of adults and children and for interactive contacts with science and technology.
At present, exhibition areas are:

- Interactive exhibition completely dedicated to the Sea
- Children's Workshop

4. MUSEUM OF THE SEA OF NAPLES

This little museum is inside the Istituto Nautico, a few metres from Cumana's station (Bagnoli's stop) and contains a large collection: naval models, nautical equipment, historical collectibles and a library with ancient books and magazines. Here you can admire the historical records of the Neapolitan maritime tradiction of the last two centuries. It's the only nautical museum pole in the city.

5. ETRUSCAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM “DE FEIS”

Inside the Denza Institute, the Etruscan Archaeological Museum “De Feis” collects Etruscan artifacts dating from the VI century B.C. and Samnite artifacts from the IV century B.C. The museum shows some evidences and illustrations to remind us that Campania was a melting pot of different cultures, including the Etruscan one.

6. SEAFRONT

Bagnoli's seafront is a very suggestive place, at night and day and in every time of the year. It's almost three kilometers long and connects Piazza Bagnoli to Pozzuoli. Along this way there are several bar, pizzerias, restaurants and clubs and you can enjoy a magnificent view.

7. NATURAL RESERVE CRATERE DEGLI ASTRONI

The Astroni Reserve is a green lung where there's an extinct volcano. It's the perfect place for hiking: there are different paths, a wood and three small lakes. Various animals, especially birds, and lots of plant species inhabite this area.

8. TERME DI AGNANO

In Via Agnano, in the green, you can find the archaeological Terme area. You can admire archaeological Greek ruins and the remains of the thermal plant built by the Emperor Adriano at the end of the first and the beginning of the second century A.D.

9. IPPODROMO DI AGNANO

Between Astroni Reserve and Agnano Terme there is the Ippodromo di Agnano, the biggest racecourse in Italy and one of the oldest and most famous in Europe. During the horse races you can have free entrance to the park, provided with an equipped kids area.
